Kelly M. Mitchell: Who Are You, Really? Discovering Your True Self

Have you ever been asked, "Who are you, really?" It's a question that can stop you in your tracks and leave you searching for an answer. For many of us, the response isn't readily available because we've spent so long living in the shadows of others' expectations, losing sight of our true selves.

Living in the Shadows

From a young age, we're often taught to conform to societal norms and meet the expectations of those around us. We adapt to the roles assigned to us—dutiful child, responsible student, reliable employee—without pausing to consider if these roles align with who we truly are. Over time, this adaptation can lead to a profound disconnection from our authentic selves.

My Journey to Self-Discovery

I understand this struggle all too well. For the first 43 years of my life, I lived under the weight of what I believed others expected of me. I followed the rules, met expectations, and played my part well. But beneath the surface, I felt a growing sense of dissatisfaction and a yearning for something more.

It wasn't until I experienced a series of personal challenges that I was forced to confront these feelings head-on. The passing of my daughter by suicide was a pivotal moment that shattered my world. In the aftermath of this tragedy, I founded Aidaen's Place Youth Wellness Center as a way to support the youth in my community and honor her memory. This experience ignited a transformation within me and made me realize the importance of living authentically.

Embracing My True Self

At 43, I made a conscious decision to stop hiding and start living a life of passion and purpose. This journey wasn't easy, but it was necessary. I began to prioritize my needs, desires, and values in every choice I made. This shift allowed me to uncover my true self—someone who is resilient, compassionate, and committed to helping others overcome their own barriers.

Helping Others Find Themselves

Through my coaching practice, I've made it my mission to guide others on their journey to self-discovery. I believe that everyone deserves to thrive, not just survive. By fostering resilience, strength, and perseverance, I help my clients break through the barriers that keep them from living the lives they were meant to live.

Your Journey Begins Here

If you find yourself feeling lost or stuck in someone else's shadow, know that you're not alone. The journey to self-discovery is a deeply personal one, but it's also incredibly rewarding. It's about shedding the layers of who you think you should be and embracing who you truly are.

Tips for Finding Your Authentic Self

  1. Reflect on Your Values - Identify what truly matters to you. What are the principles and beliefs that guide your decisions and actions? Knowing your values helps you align your life with what is genuinely important to you.

  2. Listen to Your Inner Voice - Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings. What are your passions and interests? What activities make you feel most alive? Your authentic self is often revealed in the moments when you feel most engaged and fulfilled.

  3. Set Boundaries - Learn to say no to things that don't serve your true self. Setting boundaries is crucial in maintaining your authenticity and protecting your energy.

  4. Seek Out New Experiences - Step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Exploring different activities and environments can help you discover new aspects of yourself.

  5. Surround Yourself with Supportive People - Build a network of friends, family, and mentors who support and encourage your journey towards authenticity. Positive relationships can provide the validation and encouragement you need.

  6. Practice - Be kind to yourself. The journey to self-discovery can be challenging, and it's important to give yourself grace and patience along the way.

  7. Journal Regularly - Writing about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences can help you gain clarity and insight into your true self. Journaling is a powerful tool for self-reflection and growth.

  8. Seek Professional Guidance - Sometimes, the path to finding your authentic self requires professional support. A coach or therapist can provide valuable guidance and tools to help you on your journey.
